Environment Policy statement

Lafarge is committed to continually improving our environmental performance. We aim to use energy and natural resources more efficiently, minimize the production of waste, air emissions, and water consumption and wastewater discharges, while seeking ways to preserve heritage, landscape and biological diversity.

Lafarge is not only a leader in product innovation and sustainable manufacturing practices, but we also lead the industry in environmental restoration and preservation efforts across the United States and Canada. We are committed to conducting our business in a way that has minimal impact on the environment, and that is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. We encourage our facilities to further exceed these requirements by honoring one site every year with the Lafarge Environmental Recognition Award.

At Lafarge, we have designed an environmental policy to protect the environment, as well as human health and well-being. Our goals are to use energy and natural resources more efficiently, while seeking ways to preserve heritage, landscape and biological diversity. However, it is our Lafarge employees who carry out that mission every day through actions large and small that make our long-term vision successful.

Case Studies

Albert Dyck Memorial Park Lafarge Lake		At Lafarge facilities in the towns of Coquitlam and Abbotsford in British Columbia, we were faced with making a decision about what to do with two former gravel pits. The challenge of restoring the land to a viable habitat yielded results that were not only beneficial to the local ecology, but also to area residents.

Lafarge Roberta Recycles		Lafarge is always looking for ways to reduce waste and incorporate recycled products in our manufacturing process. After the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) lost its recycled glass processor, Lafarge’s nearby Roberta Plant agreed to accept the glass for use in the cement-manufacturing process. The arrangement turned out to be a win-win situation for both the AEC and Lafarge.

Fish Creek Provincial Park		Lafarge donated land to the city of Calgary, Alberta, for Fish Creek Provincial Park. The park is a unique combination of wetlands, mixed forest and open prairie, the park is a sanctuary for several species of wildlife, geological formations and native grasslands.

Greeley Plant wins Environmental Recognition Award		The asphalt may be black, but the Lafarge Greeley plant is definitely GREEN.

Reclaiming Land and Ancestry		When Lafarge purchased a company called Western Mobile of New Mexico nearly a decade ago, the deal included a 120-acre tract of land in New Mexico that was originally part of the ancestral home of the Santa Clara Pueblo tribe. The Santa Clara Pueblo can now reclaim the landscape so that future generations of the tribe will have an important place to reconnect with their ancestry.

The Lafarge Ontario Trail		In 2000, Lafarge dedicated land to the city of Hamilton, Ontario, for a recreational park known as the Lafarge Ontario Trail. The park has gained popularity in Ontario among hikers, cyclists and cross-country skiers.

Living Lands and Waters		Every year, we team up with Living Lands and Waters for the “Adopt a Mississippi River Mile” clean-up effort.

Wild Turkey Management		Lafarge operations often share space with a variety of wildlife ranging from elk and deer to waterfowl and even wild turkeys. In 2004, Lafarge initiated a program to preserve a wild turkey habitat near its quarry in Presque Isle, Mich.

Wildlife Habitat Council		The certification of Lafarge operations by the Wildlife Habitat Council is an important verification that we are making positive steps towards protecting wildlife habitat species and encouraging biodiversity, a key element of environmental sustainability.

World Wildlife Fund		Lafarge partners with WWF Canada to protect predators such as black bears, grizzly bears, timber wolves, bobcats and mountain lions in the Bow River Valley, where we have several sites.

Protecting Silver Grove Wildlife		As part of the award-winning environmental program at our gypsum wallboard plant in Silver Grove, Ky., Lafarge North America employees started a wildlife habitat committee dedicated to initiating projects such as the installation of nesting sanctuaries for purple martins, raptors, waterfowl and even bats.
